From the moment we opened the Promt Standard translation software we were hooked. The interface is easy to use with self explanatory icons for each feature available through the system.

The accuracy was impressive with correct grammar and clear pronunciation when using the speak feature. The only differentiation that kept Promt from the No. 1 spot was the limited language selections.

Promt makes up for the lack of available language selections by their advanced features, which include some of the most accurate translations of any translation software.

Effectiveness:

Promt did better than almost every other translation software in this review at translating text into English. The Promt translations were clearer and more accurate than the competition. Promt also includes a grammar feature which translates different grammar rules from one language to another. This feature is highly impressive as many other programs have trouble with different grammar rules.

Most of the mistakes you might find with Promt will have to do with simple word-order mix-ups rather than incorrect translation. To see the test results or to find out how the tests were conducted, look at the articles 'Test Format' and 'Translation Software Test Results'.

Features:

The features which come with Promt Standard are some of the best available. There are so many useful features with Promt, like the ability to select text and have it translated automatically, with the translation appearing next to the selected text. This allows you to cut down on the time it takes to do translations. It also prevents you from flipping back and forth between screens, as other programs force you to do by cutting and pasting text into the translator.

One unique feature we found to be truly inspired is the ability to translate web pages. Promt will have you input the URL and will then direct you to the website. Once you are at the website, the text will show up in its original language and immediately be translated before your eyes. We were very impressed with the advanced technology and accuracy of this feature.

Promt also alerts you when, during a translation, there are available word variations. You can then select the word you would like to use and either set that as the preferred word, or have the options come up at every translation. You can also personalize translation rules that Promt is not familiar with and merge and edit your dictionaries.

There are three dictionaries available, including general dictionaries, which are a part of Promt and contain general lexicons. These dictionaries are used for general translations. The second option is called Dictionary Collections. These dictionaries are purchased separately and contain specialized dictionaries for specific subjects. This dictionary selection is used to improve the accuracy of your translations.

The last option is called the User Dictionaries. These dictionaries are compiled by users and add a customized and individual feel to your translations.

You can translate emails easily and chat with anyone in the world with the chat translation feature. This feature is available for ICQ, Skype, QIP and MSN Messenger. You can choose to have your translation appear in a box to the side, or in your ongoing chat box.

Promt also has a Speak feature which allows you to hear your translation put into words. We were very impressed with this feature as it included accurate pronunciations for each language the text was translated into.

Promt has support for common Office suites such as Microsoft Word and Outlook 2000-2007 and Adobe Reader and Acrobat Pro. Once you set your software up in each of these programs, a tool bar will appear which will allow you easy access to all of Promt’s features.

Ease of Use:

Promt is extremely easy to use because of its self-explanatory interface with labeled icons which are organized into easy access categories. To do a quick translation all you need to do is highlight a text, right click and select “translate” and the translation will appear next to the selected text. You can also translate entire files through the simple interface or copy and paste text directly into the program. The rest of the features and functions are also easily accessible through the main interface.

Available Languages:

You can buy Promt with specific translation languages, or you can buy the “giant” version and get six languages included in the program. These include French, German, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish. The pack with the multi languages is more expensive than the packs with the two languages.

Supported Formats/Files:

Promt supports a variety of files, including Word, OpenOffice, PDF, RTF and HTML formats. You can also translate text from a web browser, email message or instant messaging conversation.

There is a user guide located on the Promt toolbar and a FAQ available for Promt, which can help with installation, use and troubleshooting questions. You can also contact Promt through telephone or email.
