PROS / Translation profiles make sending the right translations to the right people easy.
CONS / There is no speech-to-text function to help you pronounce words properly.
VERDICT / Systran’s Business Translator provides companies with overseas offices a robust and affordable day-to-day translation software.
Systran offers a wealth of translation software that supports a total of 15 different languages. These can be mixed and matched with your choice of a base language to make 52 language pairs. Each language pair is available for purchase. The company also offers software in ten multilingual packs, such as the Systran Business Translator English World Pack that we review here. This specific language bundle translates from or to English and German, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Russian and Swedish.
Business Translator automatically recognizes the language in front of it and, like most of the best translation programs, includes a batch function to translate entire file folders at once, an automatic spell checker to ensure your source text is correct before you translate it and a “do not translate” ability that allows place names or foreign language phrases to remain untranslated. This language translation software also comes with a built-in business dictionary as well as a directory focused on computer science. These, along with other personalized dictionaries, save matched sentences as you go, help your project have more context and translate with more accuracy.
One of the less-typical options in the Systran Business Translator is a named translation profile you can save and reuse for different kinds of translation projects. You can combine your dictionary choices with your domain, filter linguistic preferences and then save it all to your new, named profile. This can save you and your staff a great deal of expensive time. For instance, a profile can be applied to a contact in your email database. With this profile, your Italian programmer only receives documents only in Italian, in informal style, with a computer dictionary context. Three predefined profiles are included for business, informal and technical translations. Another less-seen feature is an acronym detector that determines the real meaning of an acronym and translates to its equivalent or spells it out for better translation.
Installation of the software is easy, and the application is intuitive to use. Microsoft Suite applications can be opened from inside the software, translated and made into foreign-language copies. The interface is clean and uncluttered and everything is easy to find and understand.
Despite its many better-than-average components, one of the things absent from Systran’s Business Translator is a speech-to-text function. This is often used to check the pronunciation of a word you have not heard before and is not a part of Systran’s offering.
Help and support are easy to find. A FAQs page is available on the website and support is offered both through phone and email contact. A “Help” button that provides several support functions is found on the menu bar, should you need help in the middle of a translation.
Systran’s Business Translator provides a wide variety of good translation-software features, like language-recognition and batch-file functions. At the same time, it offers less-typical options like named translation profiles and an acronym detector. This translation software does not provide a speech-to-text function. The English World Pack we review includes 12 languages besides English and is a good option if your company has offices in several overseas areas.
